Evaluation Question Four.

How did you use new media technologies on the construction research planning and evaluation stages?

Within the construction of my music video I used media technologies such as final cut express and youtube to achieve the best sound and video quality to fit my desired target audience. By using final cut express this allowed us to add in editing techniques for example speeding up and slowing down time, letter boxing technique, create short and long cuts and making chloe's motions more distinct to fit to the tempo of my chosen track. It also allowed us to experiment with colour theory by de-saturating the colours down to black and white to create an effect of past tense.

I also used photoshop, which played a huge part in the creation of my digi pack and poster. By using photoshop it allowed us to add in typography in a verity of different places in a verity of fonts and add in such icons as bar codes and blackberry icons. It also allowed us to be experimental by adding in effects such as liquify and cartoon, this was very important to us as our drum and bass genre is known for using animation within their CD's and posters instead of realistic images.

Within my research I used social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter, Myspace and fan sites for Chase and Status to get a better understanding of my target audiences wants and needs. I also used Youtube to gain statistics about where video's of a similar genre had been watched and what percentages of genders had watch them, including age groups again giving me a better understanding of the target audience of drum and bass is.

When it came to planning my music video I used the internet to help me plan the production of my video. I did this through researching train times for london and contacting my actors and actresses through Facebook to make sure everyone was aware of dates, times and clothing.

Throughout this evaluation I used Final Cut Express to film and edit questions one, two and three as I felt this was the best way to present them, I also used blogger to help reflect on the journey I have made throughout.

Poster Edges

Me and Molly received feedback for our Digipack back and our tutor commented on how we should match the back more with the front therefore instead of just using the same image we also used the tool poster edges (which is what is used on our front cover) and also applied it to our back cover although then liquified the image in a spiral to make it non-repeative but a clear theme throughout.

We then applied the rest of our typography which included songs and copyright rights and a barcode.

Focus Group Responses To First CD And Ideas For Poster.

Focus group on CD pack and ideas for poster:

Person one main comments: Love the idea of the middle being shots from the pit gig however maybe make one shot a second after the other so they are different and perhaps carry this theme on to the poster

Person two main comments: Like how you have linked it in so well with the music video however could you make the front and back more similar to each other by perhaps instead of just liquifying the image on the back cartooning then liquifying to make it more similar

Person three main comments: Like how it all fits together and the inside cover opens out with lyrics form the music video. Perhaps carry them these of the photo from the front and back on to the poster making it cartoon to fit in with the drum and bass genre and theme.

Person four main comments:Like the typography you have used as it fits with the drum and bass genre theme.

Person five main comments: I agree with person one and two and perhaps add ratings from music magazines of the video onto the poster.

Video Editing.

We felt to make it distinctive that the end part of out video was looking back we made the clips of looking back black and white as some of the feed back we received in research was that the narrative was quite complicated to understand therefore by swapping around the narrative and adding in edits such as adding black and white (as the footage is first played in the present tense and again at the end in the sense of looking back on their time together ) it makes the whole narrative alot clearer.

Font Experimentation For DigiPack

Whilst creating our Digipack me and molly wanted to look into more inventive ways of using typography therefore went on the website www.dafont.com  to explore different types of font we could use which would be creative as well as suitable for our target audience, we found several possibilities including these bellow...

However we went with this font as we felt it best suited our target audience as well as being creative and very similar to the one in which 'chase and status' themselves use.

Discussion With Mr Canning About Our Video And How To Improve.

Today Me, Molly and Mr Canning sat down an discussed what we can do to improve on our video and came up with these points...

  • The narrative build up was too long -Done
  • Match the Tempo - When Harry opens the door add an effect to make his movements more distinctive. -Done
  • Keep everything up to where chloe blows the candle out.- Done
  • First 35 seconds need reworking - perhaps concentrate on Harrison performing. - Done
  • Try switching the ending with the beginning - Done
  • Include more of an verity of shots within the argument scene. - Done
  • Be more creative slow parts up and speed some down. - Done
  • Chop it up more. eg. gig scene
  • Cut Harrison more into gig part
  • Stop the pit gig when music changes as it goes on for too long. - Done
  • Make 2:46 onwards calmer - Done
  • Fade the ending out
  • Letter box editing perhaps swap around images to get more included within it. - Done
After this discussion we know we have a lot of work to do however don't know if any of it will work till we try it, however hopefully it will allowing us to improve our video.

Photoshop Experiments

Here are some experiments in which me and molly made when seeing what sorts of edits we could use of photoshop and see which ones could actually work. I really like the first one and the 4th one as i feel they are most suited to the target audience. I am also debating weather to draw my own title out as within my research i found the typography they use i feel is quite significant to them as its usually quite creative and i feel i cannot find a font which really reflects our video, therefore i will draw out the title, scan it in and use photoshop to layer it over our chosen image.

Experimenting With Photoshop

Here are some quick and simple experiments in photoshop in which me and molly did by simply taking screen shots from our video and mainly looking in to the typography as we know there CD covers are usually heavily influences by their font, size, colour etc, therefore tried to find one which we felt represented Chase and Status as a band as much as we could.

CD Cover Ideas

Today we started work into our digi pack and after researching into different drum and bass and chase and status album covers we discovered they are quite animated in the sense that it is rare to see an image which hasn't been heavily edited or distorted, it is most of the time about the typography and the colours surrounding it sometimes almost have markings in which connote the movement of the music and the rhythm within the beats.

Here is some ideas me and molly came up with for our CD cover however we are unsure as what to do at the moment and played around with layering in photoshop as we don't know how we would do a stereotypical digital image such as seen above.

Learning About Markers.

Today i learnt how to add markers to match up the lip syncing exactly to the music to line it up. Therefore we achieve the best look we can for our video.

Focus Group Responses To The Rough Cut Of Our Chase And Status' Music Video

Focus group on first video

person one's main comments: narrative is confusing at times; like letter boxing done but perhaps make the section chosen bigger so can see more of the fag being put out and perhaps lighten it so you can see more of what is going on; like the sped up scenes through london at night and going through the underground

person two's main comments: more of argument scene; shorten clips in pit gig to keep up with tempo of music; love how it starts and ends with chloe being upset.

person three's main comments: when fading harrison in, fully fade him in so you cant see so much of the date scene; really like the shot of harrison at the end where the camera goes from a stage light down to him singing on a block.

person four main comments: cut the pit rave in time with tempo; love the ending where chloe and harry are seen using a steady cam looking back on their relationship.

Person five main comments: like the fast cuts and drug scenes as well the feel of it being cheaply made as It fits to the steroeotypical way of looking at a conventional drum and bass music video.

Through these comments me and molly can now move on and improve more of our video to suit the target audience the most we can.

Uploading All Footage And Carrying On With Editing...

We have now managed to upload all of our footage and carry on with editing starting to finish our rough cut so we can start adding special effect.

Filming Complete!

Today we completed our filming and filmed Harry entering the pit and walking down the stairs into the pit, i believe we can now edit it as though he is entering the pit then go to the pit gig therefore it seems as though he is in it. Now we have time to carry on with our editing and our rough cut so we have time to add all the special effect we want to.
